Choi Jong Yoon is a Neunghwa plate Artist.
Neunghwa plate (능화판) is a woodblock engraved with various patterns.
It is used to press several sheets of hanji or even to become a cover of a book.
The purpose of the Neunghwa plate is to protect the old books by forming an air layer, giving also a beautiful artistic touch decorating ancient Korean books as covers.
In his childhood, calligraphy was his passion, through this he became naturally interested in traditional Korean art.
"What kind of tools and materials does he use to create his art?"
He works by hand, using only chisels and hammers.
The main material of his Artwork is native zelkova and wild cherry trees which is age ranges from at least 20 years to over 100 years.
There are few reasons why he always uses the native trees grown in Korea:
1. The patterns are finer than imported trees.
2. They are very well dried because of the climate.
3. As the years go by, the colour of the trees changes mysteriously
and the more you look, the deeper it gets.
4. It adapts naturally to the environment and temperature, therefore, does not require any special care or maintenance.
"What is his working method? What steps does he follow?"
First, he prepares all the dry wood in advance and then he decides the pattern and material that will suit it.
He tries to emphasize the subtlety of wood while preserving the natural colour and pattern of the tree, without using many colours or non-natural products. He minimizes any possible alteration of the original material.
The colour he uses at his work is Pigment for dyeing and lacquer.
His art focused on carving his heart into the tree and each Neunghwa plate contained his passion and heart.
Thank you so much Choi Jong Yoon for giving Us the opportunity to share your Art and your Knowledge.
